Ball State University Cardinal Trombone Choir


The Ball State University Trombone Studio is a leading base of trombone study in the Midwest. Comprised of 18-24 members yearly, members of the studio study Music Education, Music Performance, and Music Media Production. The core values of the BSU Trombone Studio are centered on stylistic versatility, technical proficiency, musical expression, pedagogical acumen, and commitment to the audiences and the students we serve. Recent highlights for the studio include being the host institution for the 2019 International Trombone Festival and performances at the 2018 and 2022 ITFs. Current students perform with regional symphonies, theaters, and bands throughout Indiana, and also earn coveted spots in leading DCI drum corps. Recent graduates of the studio are teaching at prominent public school programs throughout Indiana and also are on the faculty of Baylor University and Taylor University. Some have gone on to graduate studies at the University of Michigan, Texas Tech, and Western Michigan University, among others. The studio is led by Associate Professor of Music Dr. Chris Van Hof, who along with Carol Jarvis is co-author of the book "Trombone21: Style and Sound for the 21st-Century Trombonist.”
