The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” provides musical support for the leadership of The United States, to include all branches of government, and to a wide spectrum of national and international events to connect the Army to the American people. “Pershing’s Own” sets strategic environments through diplomatic performances during foreign military counterpart visits, arrival ceremonies at the White House, State Dinners, and public performances. Located adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, The Army Band has provided ceremonial honors and public entertainment to the American people for over 100 years. “Pershing’s Own” consists of 260 of nation’s finest musicians and support staff, forming a premier performing organization that includes 10 distinct ensembles, supported by a dedicated team of technicians that ensure seamless operation of all artistic and production elements.

The Music Library houses a collection of over 30,000 titles from solo repertoire to full-scale works and is the primary music resource for the organization. The U.S. Army Band Librarians provide essential customer service by delivering accurate, timely music support for Army Band conductors and musicians. Library Staff prepare and provide music for public concerts, State Funerals, ceremonies and diplomatic engagements in the nation’s capital, and around the world. The Music Library is also frequently called upon to assist military music libraries in support of Joint Service missions within the National Capitol Region. Our team serves as a responsive, knowledgeable resource—balancing attention to detail with flexibility to meet the demands of high-profile events and senior leadership engagements. 


Audition Information

For civilian candidates, please consult with your local Army Recruiter prior to applying to confirm enlistment eligibility. Following a successful phone interview, applicants must aquire service eligibility through a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).


Eligibility

All applicants must meet basic enlistment standards for The U.S. Army including:

  • Age 17-34 at the time of the audition
  • Currently hold U.S. Citizenship
  • Meet height/weight standards
  • Meet medical, moral, and physical requirements. If you have any preexisting medical conditions, recent surgeries, or criminal history, please consult with your local Army Recruiter prior to applying to confirm enlistment eligibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music or related field; or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge of repertoire, foreign terms, orchestration, and notation
  • Proficiency with MS Office with emphasis on Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and MS Teams
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat
  • Knowledge of copyright law
  • Experience with music preparation, including part creation, proofing and editing cuts, errata, and inserting measure numbers and rehearsal letters
  • A commitment to providing positive and helpful service to all library users
  • The ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment with impeccable attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to work as part of a team, including participating constructively in meetings

The following skills will be considered favorably:

  • Adobe Creative Suite proficiency (Photoshop/InDesign)
  • Knowledge of music notation software
  • Database maintenance and administration, familiarity with Filemaker
  • Preservation of music and archival collections
  • Research and respond to historical inquiries regarding repertoire, concerts, and national anthems

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • All aspects of music preparation for concert band, orchestra, chorus and chamber ensembles
  • Research and source music to be obtained through purchase, rental or loan
  • Understand and advise adherence to copyright laws
  • Ensure accurate recordkeeping and maintenance for library holding of 30,000+ materials
  • Music licensing (mechanical, synchronization, PTAs, etc.)

The annual starting salary for Staff Sergeant equates to $79,612 without dependents and $86,416 with dependents

Military Rank

Members of “Pershing’s Own” are given the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 42S (forty two sierra), “Special Band Musician”. Personnel are promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6) two months after completion of Basic Combat Training.

Location

Permanent duty assignment to Fort Myer, VA, located near the heart of Washington, DC
