Conductors and Soloist Biographies

COL Bruce R. Pulver
COL Bruce R. Pulver serves as the 12th Leader and Commander of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.”  He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Master of Science degree in Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Pulver’s past assignments include: Chief of Army Bands & Commandant, U.S. Army School of Music; Commander, U.S. Army Europe Band & Chorus; Deputy Commander, The U.S. Army Field Band; Department of the Army Staff Bands Officer; Executive Officer, U.S. Army Europe Band & Chorus; Company Commander, U.S. Army School of Music; Executive Officer, Army Ground Forces Band; the 98th Army Band; and the First Army Band. Prior to entering military service, he taught in the public schools as a high school and middle school band and choral director.

Pulver has been active as a conductor, adjudicator, and clinician around the country as well as internationally.  He is a member of the National Band Association and the American Bandmasters Association.

Shane Goforth
Shane Goforth began his career as a Texas Band Director in 1996. He currently serves as the Director of Bands at North Shore Senior High School in Houston, Texas. Under his direction, the North Shore Senior High bands have advanced to the Texas State Marching Band Championships on six occasions and were a State Finalist and UIL Area F Champion in 2016. 

The North Shore Wind Ensemble was invited to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago in 2017 and the Texas Bandmaster’s Convention in 2018 and 2024. The band has earned numerous and consistent UIL Sweepstakes awards and Best in Class recognitions and was named as a Commended Winner in the Foundation for Music Education’s National Wind Band Honors project. In 2023, Shane was awarded the Music Education Alliance’s William P. Foster Community Development Award for his service to his students and community.

Shane previously served as the Director of Bands at Holliday and Aubrey High Schools, where his bands competed at the Texas State Marching Band Championships and were awarded first place in the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series. He is an active adjudicator, guest conductor, and clinician and has presented clinics at the Midwest, TMEA, and TBA conventions.

A native of Frisco, Texas, Mr. Goforth started his musical career under the direction of Dr. Daryl Trent and studied saxophone with Brad Leali. He continued his education, earning an Associate of Music in Jazz Saxophone at Weatherford College, a Bachelor of Music with honors from the University of North Texas, and a Master of Music in Conducting from Sam Houston State University.

1LT Michael Hong
1LT Michael Hong hails from La Mirada, California, and assumed duties as Associate Conductor with The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in November 2025. Prior to joining the Army, Lieutenant Hong began his military career in 2017 with the United States Marine Corps, where he served for five years as a clarinetist with Marine Band San Diego. He holds a Master of Music degree from California State University, Fullerton, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Azusa Pacific University. His conducting studies were under Dr. Shannon Kitelinger, Alex Panos, and Robert Marroquín.

Lieutenant Hong received his commission in July 2022 from the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was recognized as a Distinguished Military Graduate. He was subsequently assigned to the U.S. Army School of Music in Little Creek, Virginia, where he served as Executive Officer. Notable highlights of his tenure include organizing a joint collaboration between the school and Norway’s His Majesty’s Kings Guard, coordinating several Norwegian Foot Marches attended by hundreds of international and interservice participants, and performing at the Army’s 250th Birthday Parade.

SFC Jake Harpster
SFC Jake Harpster is a Percussionist/Assistant Principal Timpanist for The U.S. Army Concert Band in Washington, DC.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Harpster has presented concerts throughout the United States, Canada and Europe and Asia. An enthusiast of contemporary music, he is actively commissioning and premiering many new works each year. Prior to his position in The U.S. Army Concert Band, he served as a percussionist in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and held the ACA Timpani Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival. 

As an educator, Harpster is currently the Director of Percussion for The Capitol Symphonic Youth Orchestras in Washington, DC. He has taught the percussionists of the DCI World Champion, and Fred Sanford Percussion Award-winning Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, presented masterclasses at universities nationwide, and has taught at various nationally recognized high school programs such as Center Grove (IN), Coppell (TX) and Marian Catholic (IL).

Harpster received his Master of Music in Percussion Performance with related field work in Contemporary Music Performance from the University of North Texas. He received his Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Upon graduating from Indiana, Harpster was awarded the prestigious Performer’s Certificate.
