In honor of Larry B. Campbell

Larry B. Campbell (July 20, 1940- December 29, 2024), low brass artist and Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University, earned his Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music and his M.Ed. from Southwest Texas University. Larry served on the faculty of LSU for over 30 years and was the principal trombonist for the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. He also performed on euphonium and trombone with the New Orleans Symphony and other U.S. orchestras. He performed as principal euphonium with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and is recorded on seven albums under Frederick Fennell. His first professional position was as principal and solo euphonium with the U.S. Coast Guard Band for four years, and he followed that with three years as trombonist with the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra before his LSU career. He was a featured soloist on euphonium with the U.S. Army Band and Orchestra, and at the First International Brassfest at Indiana University. Larry was a member of the professional tuba-euphonium ensemble Symphonia and performed on each of their recordings.

As an active contributor to the tuba and euphonium profession, Larry represented the U.S. on the euphonium in the First International Brass Congress where he performed and also chaired several T.U.B.A. clinics. He tested and helped develop the Hirsbrunner Euphonium with Peter Hirsbrunner in Switzerland, and he performed on the prototype of that instrument. Larry authored Master Solos, Intermediate Level for Baritone Horn which included a performance tape of the works, and he co-authored Brass Solo and Study Material Music Guide. He also published more than 75 articles and reviews.

Larry’s students were fortunate to work with him and many achieved careers in teaching and performing upon leaving LSU. They appreciated his guidance, and they stayed in close touch with their mentor and friend throughout his life. His colleagues enjoyed performing with him and spending time together at many conferences around the world. Together, they dedicate this teacher/student performance to his memory and in thanks for the gifts he provided them through his teaching, performing, and friendship.
