Biography

SSG Ju Young Yi joined The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in July 2024. A native of California and raised in New York, she attended the Manhattan School of Music Precollege, where she received a full scholarship. Yi earned her Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music in 2023 under the tutelage of Michael Wayne and was awarded the D. Stanley Hasty Memorial Scholarship.
In addition to her musical achievements, Yi graduated with the Catherine Filene Shouse Arts Leadership Program Certificate of Achievement in 2023. She also contributed to the professional music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota, Sigma Theta Chapter, serving as Editor on the 2023-2024 Executive Board.
During her time at Eastman, Yi was honored with the Verdehr Trio Chamber Music Award, which perpetuates the study and performance of the unique violin, clarinet, and piano repertoire. As part of this award, Yi and her trio curated a recital featuring pieces commissioned by the Verdehr Trio.
Yi was a member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar in 2020 and 2022. She also participated in the Maine Chamber Music Seminar from 2021 to 2022 and served as the clarinet fellow at the 2023 Bowdoin International Music Festival. Some of her collaborations include working with the Akropolis Reed Quintet and Claire Chase. Yi has also participated in masterclasses with esteemed clarinetists such as Anthony McGill, Alan Kay, Afendi Yusuf, David Howard, and Ricardo Morales.
